About Dialysis

There are five well known causes of kidney failure:

1)  Birth defect

2)  Infection (Including toxic medication overload)

3)  Injury

4)  Disease

5)  Lifestyle

The overwhelming majority of kidney disease cases are caused by poor lifestyle choices.  Also, the main risk factors for kidney disease are a combination of high blood pressure and diabetes.

Of the five stages of kidney disease, symptoms ordinarily do not present themselves, and dialysis is not usually recommended, until one has reached the third stage, known as end stage renal disease (ESRD).

You may already know that there are two main forms of dialysis, hemodialysis and peritoneal.

There are significant differences in the way in-center hemodialysis  (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) are performed and the impact that they may have on daily life.
